During a walk, a hypodermic needle became lodged in the paw of Otto, the editorial office's dog. Is there reason to fear that the pet could contract a disease?

According to veterinarian Liisa Hakosalo, pets are protected from human diseases.

– Human blood-borne diseases, such as HIV or hepatitis, are not transmitted to dogs. So there is no need to worry about those diseases, Hakosalo emphasizes.

Hakosalo explains that a needle-stick injury should be treated like any other wound caused by a dirty, sharp object. The most important first-aid measure after removing the needle is to thoroughly clean and disinfect the area using a non-stinging antiseptic. A pine resin ointment can be applied to protect the wound. The dog's condition should be monitored at home for a few days. If the puncture site begins to swell, feels warm, or starts to discharge fluid, or if the dog begins to limp, a veterinarian should be contacted.
